Lecturers from Hell

We all have to get them at least once in our uni lives. No one is that lucky to escape.

Today was my classmates turn. Dr. Suzzie has barred at least 4 that i know of from sitting for the final exam.

jeng jeng jeng

Its not like they've been a horrible students. Most only missed a max of 3 lectures, and 1 tutorial. That is not exactly grounds for barring if you ask me.
The truth is she's just a pain in the butt. She doesn't like certain people, and once she dont like, jangan harap to escape.

This is a lecturer that does not accept opinions different from her own. Since first year, she's despised students that speak out in class, especially if they have a good point and indirectly prove her wrong. Its terrible, since instead of cultivating a 'speaking-out' culture, she's forcing us to comply to the 'sit-down and shut-up' culture.

Truthfully, i dont think she's even qualified to be a lecturer in the first place. Her lectures so far has consisted of her reading out either the transparency notes word for word, or chunks from the novels, lamely attempting to make a connection between the two. Its really sad.
Who wouldn't wanna skip her class?!

The best unconfirmed news i heard is that she'll be taking a sabbatical next semester... Woo Hoo! I hope if she comes back she changes to UM or something.Muahaha....

But for now, my classmates have gotta grovel, beg, plead, strip all dignity he has and ask her to "forgive" them so they can be allowed to sit for the exam.

The alternative:
Repeating the paper under her, all over again?

No way.

ps: Ooooh, apparently UM is no longer the #1 uni in M'sia. Its been overthrown by UKM.
MuaHaha... No more gloating power, you smug peacocks... =p
At least USM is still the most beautiful uni...

Oh, that sucks! :( Poor Kevin. Lecturer from Hell indeed! I wouldn't want to repeat the paper under her, either.

Yeah, UM overthrown by UKM :D That's priceless! And USM is definitely the most beautiful campus in Malaysia :P Bwahahaha!

our local unis like to feed "qualified" lecturers.this is why our local unis r out of rank. but, they r happy enough if who got the first place in malaysia.guess that ukm is celebrating.=)

WOW. Sounds like a really bitchy person. Someone you'd love to hate.

Anyway, with the kind of lecturers we have, I guess, like what Jonathan said, you have to play by the rules.

She wouldn't have it any other way.

Our culture doesn't condone self-assertiveness and definitely doesn't encourage outspokenness.

* Hint hint * Freedom of speech?

Time to tame the shrew!

She brought up this matter about barring your badge in my class this morning. She ask our opinion whether she should give them a second chance or not. Me and my friends argue like mad that she should give your badge a second chance. We say everyone should geta second chance. i said to her she should forgive them, furthermore this month is the Puasa Month - MAAF ZAHIR BATIN-lah!!! She sarcarsticly replied - now i am convinced and have no doubt to bar all of them after what you all said. I felt like slapping her! ARGH.......!!!!!!!!!

Yorrrrr. So bad lah, your lecturer (from Andrew's story).

Apparently she doesn't buy it.

Tak dapat pahala-lah!

She probably doesn't even care. All she wants is for you all to see who's got the power.

SIgh.
Nothing can be done edi. Taken the matter up to the dean and he said it was the procedure to automatically bar students that dont respond to the warning letter.
However the unfairness of it all is those that dont even know they had one gets punnished, without any chance at explaining.
Other lecturers tell in class that they've sent out the letter.
Thanks anyway Andrew, and the other ELLSers. Not as if she could've actually done anything. THe dean said its gone beyond him, up to the Examination Dept.

I'm so mad.
This is so unfair.
I'm gonna...gonna...write a letter!

Where's our wakil MPP when you need them?

They're in hiding. Ask yourself, do you ever see them around?

I never saw them. Didn't even know who they were.

Anyway, you just have to take it in stride. As Jonathan aptly put it, it is a lesson of grace.

Just pray over it.

Speaking from (bad) experience since I worked at UKM for a short spell, i don't know how in ANY way they can be better than UM. Not saying that becos I'm a UM grad but if u saw the things i saw... heavens! I think these rating thing is just a lot of cock and bull anyway. But that's just my (eye-witness) opinion.

Makes me wonder what criteria are used by the Times Higher Education Supplement to rank the various universities.

I don't dispute Harvard, Oxford, Prince, MIT or even Beijing for that matter.

The bottomline is, what the heck with the rankings? Maybe it's good in the international arena, but I don't think Malaysians are gonna use that as a yardstick.

I meant Princeton, not Prince.

the president of NUS, cant remember his name, but he is a reknowned academic in asia, last year said that he took a look at the THES rankings for 5 minutes n then put it aside. he said that newspapers are the last people who should be ranking varsities. this in spite of the fact that his own uni was ranked very highly...

He is right. The only credible people who are qualified to rank universities are people who are academicians or former academicians.

Though there's still a margin for biasness, but at least it's more accurate than newspapers, isn't it?
