Bak Kut Teh

The other night i was eating at Lip Sin SuperTanker, and i spotted a bak kut teh stall there. Prior to that night, i've never tried BKT in Penang, so i thought- what the heck, give it a shot.

Verdict?

Bleh................Super unenjoyable. Never again.

We all know that THE thing that makes the BKT is the soup. This one's soup was, o-kay ler, but the stuff in the bowl...All sorts of funny things. Like in the picture, i'm holding up soft white tau foo, not the spongy-hole-filled kind and a meatball. Where got such things in BKT wan?!?

Not only that, they had lotsa flacid siew yoke kinda fatty bits, but hardly any nice actual pork meat; of the 3 chunks given, it was more bone than meat.

And it didn't have the oily, BKT rice, it was normal white rice. Huuuuuu.....

So my question is this, does Penang have any nice BKT stalls?
(Please dont answer me saying the best BKT is in Klang. Thats not the point.)

The best on our side of town? At Taman Sri Nibong. He operates at the coffee shop at the back corner - not the one facing the main road anymore (he used to operate in the coffee shop in the front but now some impostor with a green signboard has taken over the front spot). You will notice his HUGE cauldron of meat of all types. Customize it as you like - with offal, ribs, or choice belly meat (like sio bak). Ask for individual portions (RM7 - it is VERY filling and meaty) as it is better value for money (you guys being students).

Another good one is next to Ping Hwa Chinese Girls School in Pulau Tikus. Pass the Youth Park entrance then follow the main road as if you were going to go to the Gurney Drive Roundabout. You will have to turn right to do this. As you are on the road headed towards the roundabout, on your left will be Ping Hwa. However, the shop is BEFORE Ping Hwa so you'll have to look for it first. Try the dry version too.

[Also try the hawker stalls across from Ping Hwa (Goodall Hawker Centre). I don't think they serve BKT there but the food there is pretty good.]

Ask properly for recommendations first lah. Simply try and then say Penang BKT sucks. I mean some Penang CKT stalls suck even though CKT is a Penang specialty. You still gotta find the good ones. Haiyo. Tourists. XD

Bleh~!!! White tofu in bah kut teh? Bleh bleh....

This reminds me of the bah kut teh I had in Kota Kinabalu. Not too bad. The meatballs were kinda a nice touch.

Incidentally, I just had BKT in Old Town. The one that's beside the main road. Wasn't as good as it was. A lot of fat, badly sliced meat, and the broth was too bitter (according to mom).

And of course, the best BKT is in Klang... ;p

... according to people. I'd say Old Town still ranks first in my books.

Shelby,
I have eaten that BKT before in Super Tanker. It is very teruk! I already spelt its doom from the day I tried it but mana tahu.. until today still standing strong. Well there are many Shelby types around who want to experiment and who help keep him alive.

Yeah Bob is right. The Tmn Sri Nibong stall is probably the best on this part of the island.

However, there are 2 pretty good stalls on Gurney Drive. One is Zealand and the other is Carnation (beside Corner Club, near Gurney Hotel). You can order the BKT but order some of their other great stuff under the 'choo cha' category. If you tersalah masuk either one (they're beside each other), you still won't be dissapointed.

Conclusion.
BKT in KLANG is still the best (really!). The one close to a housing estate and in the middle part of a row of shops is Numero Uno. Not the one occupying the corner lot on the same row.
